Round 3 Match Report

Gilbert, Arizona – Looking to atone for their opening loss, the Tombstone Marshals came to Nichols Park looking for their first win of the season against the Kingsnakes. Both teams were missing some key players with Wyatt unable to decipher the difference between Saturday and Sunday, found himself up in Tucson and A.J Koernig could be found knitting booties for the baby shower (congratulations by the way A.J.). Chad "Tank" Martin won the toss and chose to kick with the 3 goal breeze.

The Kingsnakes jumped the Marshals early and controlled play out of the center, Kieran "Fitzy" Fitzpatrick who looked like he was sponsored by elastoplast with all his strapping was being menacing at Full Forward marking most balls that came his way, shame about him not being able to hit the side of the barn! Callum "sticky fingered baby faced assassin" Ford and Jack "My girlfriend gave me permission to play" Watty were marking and clearing everything across the half back line for the Kingsnakes. Chris "Pun" Gamach stepped up and put the first major on the board for the Kingsnakes closely followed by Craig Krause playing his first game in 3 years. Troy Anderson is still wondering how it was that Laki Kondylas showed him the ball and then sidestepped him to find Krause in the hotspot. The Kingsnakes went to the first break with 2 goals 7 behinds while the Marshals had not troubled the goal umpires.

The Marshals started the second quarter with the wind and most of the Kingsnakes were sucking up wind at this stage. "Sticky Fingers" Ford was begging to be rested almost as much as Watty had to beg Janelle to be allowed to play! However the Kingsnakes were able to continue on and Fitzy was finally able to put a major on the board, the first for either team in the quarter. When Krause twanged his hamstring the Marshals were able to capitalize and started getting the ball out of the middle with both Adam Smark and Jimmy "the Dog" Scanlan splitting the middle posts. The Kingsnakes stood tall and started running the ball out of defense with some poetic handballs and kicking that ended up in the hands of the elastoplast man Fitzpatrick, who was making no mistakes this term. Smark was able to put another major on the board for the Marshals, while Josh "Cheap Shot " Ashley put Paul Goldie on his back with an unnecessary hit, Goldie like he had done half a dozen times the night before when everyone thought he was done, came back strong. Martin then snuck one back for the Kingsnakes before half time. Even with the three goal breeze, the Marshals were only able to erode their deficit by a point (5-7-37 to 3-1-19)

The Kingsnakes knew that they needed to capitalize on the wind in the third quarter as the Marshals had the talent to come back; all it would take would take is for a hot chick to sit on the sideline and Darren "Old Man" Toohey would lift by 50%! Good thing Ronan Barrutt left Miss Czechoslovakia back at the dorm. With Krause out of commission J.D. Sovereign stepped into the ruck for the Kingsnakes and although it looked like a David versus Goliath battle against Smark he battled admirably and held his own in the contest. Like the previous two quarters the Kingsnakes were able to put the first major onthe board when Fitzpatrick was able to mark against Joe Butler who had a tall task in his first game to be guarding the experience of Fitzpatrick. The Marshals quickly answered with a goal to Scanlan. The Kingsnakes then blew the game wide open with three unanswered goals to Fitzpatrick, Krause and Martin. Toohey had arguably his first touch for the match, it just happened to be Ashley’s head. Joe Swierpuski then got one back for the Marshals but that was quickly answered by Matt Sovereign allowing the Kingsnakes to go to the final break with a 36 point lead.

The Marshals came in to the last term playing for pride and not wanting to be blown out of the game. Martin playing a great captains game had a different idea and kicked the first major of the final term, the Marshals were able to rally from that point and had goals through Todd Hought and Barrutt however the Kingsnakes were able to split the honors for the quarter when they answered through Krause, the Kingsnakes won the game by 36 points.

Best for the Kingsnakes were Fitzpatrick, Ford, Watty, Martin, M. Sovereign and an honourable mention to Krause in his first game back who played on with a strained hamstring. Best for the Marshals were Anderson, Butler, Smark, well done to Butler in his first game!

GAME NOTE: While we do want the Metro league to be competitive and played hard, we are however still one club and will be playing together for Arizona later this year; we will not be tolerating cheap shots and unnecessary roughness in our games. Both players reported by the umpire this week (Ashley & Toohey) have received a one game suspended sentence. This means that any further incident this metro season will result in an automatic one game suspension for them.
